Romantic melodrama set in the Welsh Valleys of 1911. Solomon is the son of a Jewish draper, selling wares in a troubled pit community. When he meets Gaenor, he calls himself Sam and pretends to be the son of an English engineer, as he knows she's from strict chapel stock, and soon the pair are spending cosy afternoons in the hayloft. But when Gaenor falls pregnant and the truth about their illicit union is discovered, the pair find their love tested to the limit by an outraged community. A tearjerker.
