A comedy-action-mobster caper, made for TV but none the worse for it. Tony (Kyle Chandler) wants to be an assassin for the mafia, but first he needs to learn the trade. Enter Stevie California (James Belushi), a hip, surfing, tofu-eating master hitman, who's going to teach Tony everything he knows, and more besides! Tony's pretty dubious about Stevie's methods, but can't afford to argue as he's in a hurry to kill the Mafia's account, who's about to give state evidence. His final "killing competence" test is to murder somebody picked at random from the phone book, who just happens to be Angel (Sheryl Lee), a social misfit who works in a mortuary and thinks her doll is a baby! Naturally, everything soon starts going horribly pear-shaped. A good-natured romp, transposing the mobster mayhem from its native Chicago to sunny California.
