Adapted from a Sam Shepard play, and with a cast as impressive as this, the film certainly has credentials. Carter is a highly successful racehorse breeder who, after many years, gets a desperate call from his old best friend Vinnie. Hoofing it back to the town of their youth Carter finds Vinnie a pitiful, alcoholic shadow of the buddy he once knew, and with their reunion begins the story of how they achieved the present and the strange triangle between the two men and the racehorse breeder's wife. It is perhaps in part the films credentials that let it down, if it didn't have any you might not find yourself quite so disappointed. It's not that Simpatico is unwatchable by any means, merely that it lacks the real depth and involvement that you might otherwise have expected.
