Sarah dreams of becoming a ballerina, but the death of her mother finds her moving to the deprived South Side of Chicago and living with her estranged dad. One of the few white faces in a predominately black neighbourhood Sarah feels uncomfortable until she is befriended by Chenille and her brother Derek. A passion for dance, and each other, soon blossoms between Sarah and Derek, but they must fight increasing opposition from family and friends to remain true to their dreams and each other.
