El Hadji decides to celebrate his wealth and success by taking a third wife, a girl younger than his daughter, but on his wedding night he is struck by the curse of Xala which leaves him impotent. Xala is a delicious satire which targets the increasing gap between rich and poor within independent Senegal and the incompatible mix of colonial pomposity and ethnic tradition amongst the wealthy Senegalise. Increasingly surreal and highly enjoyable.
