AD 117; a Roman legion marches north to avenge an attack on a Roman fort by the Picts, but they themselves are attacked, slaughtered and their general captured. A rag-tag collection of survivors are trapped behind enemy lines and, pursued by the blood-thirsty Picts, must make the perilous journey back to safety.

In an attempt to anchor King Arthur's existence in some kind of historical reality, the filmmakers behind this update of the Arthurian legend have focused on the politics of the time (set roughly around the time the Romans were leaving our sceptred isle) and left alone the more traditional, supernatural elements associated with the legend.
