However he finds no usual motive when investigating a man beaten to death, this man was killed because he was a Jew. "Hate", Finlay says, "is like a gun." A landmark film noir nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Edward Dmytryk directs a taught stylish tale that, certainly for its time, dared to explore a topic rarely covered in Hollywood; anti-Semitism in the US.

Bogart plays a man, convicted of murdering his wife, who escapes from prison in order to prove his innocence and, in trying to hide from the law, has undergone back-street cosmetic surgery. Even though he does not appear from behind his bandages until half way through the film that famous voice gives him away! Watch out for the superb use of first person camera work. A classic in every sense of the word.

Set in a Paris hotel this comic tribute to the noir B-movie follows the efforts of a ridiculously incompetent detective trying to solve a murder with the dubious assistance of his inspector nephew. To add to the confusion the hotel patrons, a boxer's entourage, an arguing couple and the Mafia, are all up to devious activities of their own. Hilarious.

Perhaps THE classic film noir, made in a studio in 6 days on a minimal budget. Fatalistic narrator Neal is hitching west to catch up with his girlfriend when his lift drops dead on him. Savage is superb as the femme fatale who blackmails him into a scam. A must for any student or lover of film noir.

Skint black ex-GI Easy Rawlins is asked to track down a mysterious missing woman with an illicit taste for black men. But two murders later he realises he's way out of his depth and, even worse, he himself has become the hunted. Sultry, smokey thriller set in an authentically recreated 1940's LA. Everything - the performances, Tak Fujimoto's elegant camerawork, the jazz and blues soundtrack, the snappy script - slots neatly into Franklin's overall design. A superbly stylish movie.

Classic film noir. Frank Bigelow wakes up after a night on the tiles feeling the worse for wear. He soon discovers that he has, in fact, been poisoned and has only hours to live. And so he is plunged into an unfamiliar underworld and a desperate bid to find his own murderer. Superbly gripping.
