HERCULES (1997)
CertificationU Our Rating
Disney's 35th animated feature, and definitely one of the best of recent years. Designed by Gerald Scarfe, there are some truly terrible monsters, toothless old hags, and the voice of James Woods as chief baddie Hades. Still awash with cheesy music, though not as much as usual, and of course there's A Moral, as well as a sugary love story, but on the whole it's a pleasantly witty surprise.

MARY POPPINS (1964)

A proto-structuralist text which reveals and deconstructs the deep fissures in the facade of Victorian middle-class society and culturally constructed sexual roles. Dick Van Dyke's terrible British accent and the clever use of non-naturalistic background shows its Brechtian credentials.

PETE'S DRAGON (1977)

Pete is an orphan boy with a rather remarkable friend, a large pink and green dragon that only he can see, but who gets the young lad into all soughts of mischief. This Walt Disney mixture of animation and real people is great fun and has some toe tapping tunes.
