An excellent black comedy, handsome thriller and a tall story that keeps you guessing as it unwinds. The genuinely ridiculous plot (a man pays a couple of goons to 'pretend' to kidnap his wife in order to get his paws on his in-laws' 'ransom' money) is completely credible as mighty plans fall apart, spiralling ever more beyond the protagonist's control and leaving us marvelling at the complex stupidity of human nature. A modern classic.

A brilliant horror film with Mia Farrow as the mother, pregnant for the first time, living in an ageing New York apartment block and surrounded by a weird bunch of neighbours. Mostly alone and increasingly paranoid she becomes convinced they form a witch's coven with designs on her baby. Superb.

Scarlet-haired punk Lola (Potente) has just 20 minutes to raise 100,00 marks, otherwise her petty criminal boyfriend Manni (Bleibtreu) will have to explain to his psychotic gangster boss, how he managed to leave the proceeds of a shady drug deal on the Berlin subway. With time running out it looks likely that Manni may have to rob the convenience store across the way in order to save his skin.
