Champion is a forlorn, chubby little lad living alone with his grandmother and an overweight dog. The arrival of a bicycle gives the wee chunker his first, and indeed last, focus in life and with the progression of time we behold an adult who lives and breathes the harsh world of professional cycling. Kidnapped on his maiden Tour de France, Granny and porky pooch pursue his captures to a huge metropolis where they are befriended by three wildly eccentric but sweet natured old dames from the musical halls of yesteryear. Belleville Rendezvous is damn hard to define; sublime animation, hardly any words, rich in surreal imagery, visual humour and soaked with pathos. A remarkable and original film.
