Shades of Bunuel and Almodovar abound in this alternately surreal and silly black comedy. In an upmarket French suburb, a bourgeois family's life is thrown distinctly off-kilter when Papa arrives home one day with a white rat. Almost immediately, its presence seems to trigger uncharacteristically outlandish behaviour amongst the players. Boring son Nicolas suddenly announces he's gay, and, soon after, his skittish sister Sophie throws herself from the bedroom window, confining herself to a wheelchair. Star of the show is Evelyne Dandry as Mama, who remains impeccably normal throughout.
