The intertwined lives of 2 women in 1970's France, set against the progress of the women's movement in which Agnes Varda was involved. Pomme and Suzanne meet when Pomme helps Suzanne obtain an abortion after a third pregnancy which she cannot afford. They lose contact but meet again ten years later. In Agnes Varda's directorial debut she faithfully portrays the complicated relatioship between a married couple (exceptiionally played by Sylvia Monfort and Philippe Noiret) set against the backdrop of a small Mediterranean town. Shot with a documentary feel, the film also focuses on the daily struggles of the locals, and was radical enough to later be considered as one of the progenitors of the French New Wave.
