The runaway success at last year's Goya Awards, Pablo Berger's Blancanieves takes the tale of Snow White and resets it in 1920s Andalucia, telling the tale of Carmen, the young daughter of a celebrated bullfighter, and her passage into adulthood and conflicts with her evil stepmother (a wondrously wicked Maribel Verdu). This makes the acting abilities of the two leads, Jean du Jardin and Bérénice Bejo, all the more important and they really do a wonderful job. The blossoming romance between the leads can also be seen as a metaphor for the love of cinema, and the way in which it has changed over time. 5/5"
