ALIEN 3 (1992)

The third installment of Ripley's nightmare. Brilliantly conceived and brave denouement of the Alien trilogy, with Ripley stranded on a prison planet inhabited by psychopathic British actors....and IT. Brutal and cold, the atmosphere is superb, and the lack of guns and bangs only adds to it. And then they made another one... find out more...

Sigourney Weaver returns as New and Improved Ripley. Utterly annihilated at the end of Alien 3, the bits of her left over have been patched up by mad, misguided space scientists, who've added more than a dash of alien DNA for good measure. This has the extraordinary effect of endowing her with a Harlem Globetrotter sized talent for basketball, and a nifty repertoire of one-liners to rival Oscar Wilde. It also gives her an enormous dose of that kick-ass attitude a girl needs if she's going to ove find out more...

Based on the myth of the Beast of Gevaudan, a creature that roamed the French countryside in the 18th Century slaughtering women and children. You know how before this came out at the cinema there was massive internet hype, a mind boggling disaster, sci-fi, horror, action flick, but bugger all about what the plot actually involved? Well that's because apart from monsters reeking havoc in New York, and some pretty young things trapped in the carnage, there is no plot; nada, zilch, nothing. Cloverfield works so well because it stoutly refuses to offer you anything other than adrenalin fuelled, clammy palmed escapism and filming it throug find out more...

George Romero's classic horror satire gets a rather more serious modern day makeover, resulting in a genuinely frightening addition to the zombie genre. The plot remains fairly true to the original, portraying a world where all the seats around Satan's dinner table have been filled, forcing the recently departed to walk the earth instead. Only this time they don't walk, see. They run. And it is this subtle change that moves this film from gory satire to an edge-of-the-futon suspense horror, as a find out more...

In this, the sequel to Night Of The Living Dead, the flesh eating zombies return. As they shuffle around a deserted shopping mall one can only but reflect on the damage supermarket muzak inflicts on the senses. Good shocker from the master of the undead, George A Romero. find out more...

The third part of Romero's zombie triology. A bigger budget than the other two and featuring state of the art zombies. A small bunch of survivors are holed up in a bunker with their hopes resting on a small group of scientists experimenting on the zombies. Tense rather than terrifying, and with a black comic undercurrent, it rests on the bleak observation that, zombies or no zombies, chances are that we, the living, will tear each other apart. Not for the faint hearted. find out more...

Preposterous but very entertaining paranormal-actioner, presided over by a tangle of giant squid. A bunch of thieves, led by Treat Williams, board a luxury cruise liner in the South Seas, only to find that all the passengers have had the water sucked out of them by an unknown entity (the aforementioned squid). So it's no great surprise when Treat's gang, poking around in the pitch black floating morgue, begins to diminish in numbers at an alarming rate. Schlock-horror, elevated by a strong cast find out more...
