A British made, 1950s epic charting the sinking of the unsinkable. On April 10th 1912, the luxury liner Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage. The definitive 'Apocalypse Now' (as if the original wasn't pretty definitive) this has nearly an hour of extra footage fleshing out the surreal journey of our central protagonists and, though it brings the film to a whisker short of three and a half hours, much of it explains what happens to the eclectic characters we meet. The original television series version following the crew of a German WW2 U-Boat as they live together, hunt Allied shipping and are preyed on themselves. The tension, claustrophobia and their fear leap out of the screen and totally avoids any sense of nationalism in what would have been fatal for this superb production.

First Wolfgang Petersen's TV serial was cut to make a highly acclaimed film, nominated for 6 Oscars, but now he has reshot many scenes, added new ones and remastered the sound in order to make a genuine movie. Herzog's epic movie about a man's obsessive attempt to bring opera to the Indians living deep in the Peruvian jungle. To do this he must take a steamship/tub way up the Amazon river system, a monumental task, at one point involving transporting it over a not unconsiderable hill, with the help of a system of pulleys and massed Indian labour. A surreal comment on madness, power and vision. There is also a documentary, Burden of Dreams, about the notoriously fraught making of the film.

The discovery of a dead body by four small town Australian males on a camping and fishing expedition, and their failure to abort their trip to report it, provides the catalyst to push the entire community closer to the edge of implosion. The nuclear family, and race relations, seem as dissonant here, if not more so, than anywhere else. Top quality movie making and very thought provoking.

Polanski's first, and arguably his finest, feature film is an economically brilliant exercise in tension. Sparse of cast and props, the atmosphere grows painfully taut as a young couple on a yachting trip and the hitcher they've picked up engage in ever more dangerous emotional games.
