This latest offering from John Duigan ("Sirens", "Flirting") is arguably his most substantial effort to date. Superbly acted drama about an eccentric family in a small Iowa town. Gilbert Grape lives with his 36 stone mother and retarded younger brother. His unsatisfactory life is brightened by the arrival of feisty young Becky (Juliette Lewis). A funny, sad and refreshingly original coming of age movie.
