Based on Anthony Burgess's novel, Clockwork Orange is a profoundly disturbing movie focusing on the mind-numbing amorality and brutality of gang-leader Alex and the even darker machinations of a government that wants to control him. Striking, masterful, seriously in your face, Clockwork Orange is deservedly up there with some of Kubrick's best work.

It's of the intrepid city adventurers up against in-bred redneck natives mould and the rednecks have the natural advantage, being both horribly cruel and at home in the woods. Gus Van Sant's take on the shooting at Columbine High School is a masterpiece. Using a cast of unprofessional actors, he has created a unique and highly affecting film, rich in atmosphere and style. The non-linear narrative follows the experiences of the key characters, giving a different perspective of events in the short time frame (most of the events shown in the film take place in about an hour). An indie thriller so dark and dangerously involving that the subtitles are completely unobtrusive. An inoffensive middle-class family set off to their secluded lakeside holiday home for a restful retreat. However the arrival of Peter and Paul puts paid to that as the pair embark on a truly chilling campaign of terror, intermittently turning to camera to consult the viewer as to what should happen next, cleverly implicating their audience in the unfolding horror. Superbly unsettling.
