Jake Hoyt is a rookie LA cop, Alonzo Harris is the streetwise detective who's going to show him how it's done; but Jake's initiation is a trial by fire and as the day progresses from one hair raising scenario to the next he becomes increasingly concerned that his mentor is a badge abusing psychopath. Training Day is a taught urban thriller, but while it's unquestionably entertaining it is no cop classic, too slick, too shallow and lacking any real emotional power....I wouldn't normally moan, but if you're going to chuck that many Oscar nominations in its direction, then I would expect to be blown away (metaphorically speaking, in case you've got the urge).
