Filmed entirely without dialogue, but rich in sound and imagery, Hukkle is a dreamily original and darkly witty depiction of not so ordinary, ordinary life. The film follows a number of residents, both human and animal, of a small rural community in Hungary going about their business, an old man with hiccups, a shepherdess and her sheep, an old woman, who may or may not be up to no good, some folk-singers at a wedding, bee keepers et al, and close-ups of the district's fauna and flora, the insect life, the farm animals, the crops, the weeds, etc. While most of the film is a series of vignettes, there is a sinister and, often barely perceptible, subplot involving murder. An impressive debut from director Gyorgy Palfi and winner of a number of European film awards.
