An adaptation of Graham Greene's novel, with Audie Murphy as the 'Quiet American' arriving in Indo-China in 1952 with naive notions of ending the war, but who finds himself at war ideologically and romantically with a troubled cynical English war correspondent, whose life he saves and who is later tricked into betraying his saviour to the commies. Greene was furious at the way the film changed his novel's anti-American tone (he's the baddy in the book) to anti-Communist and hence its 3 star rating. Nevertheless it's a cinematic great.
