The directorial debut Casey Affleck, 'I’m Still Here' is a portrayal of a tumultuous year in the life of Joaquin Phoenix. This mocumentary follows the Oscar nominee as he announces his retirement from a successful film career in late 2008 and attempts to reinvent himself with a career in hip hop. The film is a portrait of the artist at a crossroads, exploring issues of excess, courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye.
Similar in spirit to the recent Banksy film 'Exit Thru The Gift Shop', this is an ambiguous and (mostly) entertaining contribution to a burgeoning post-modern canon of films tackling Celebrity, Perception and The Media.
