Two soldiers return from Vietnam, one mentally scarred, the other physically. We flashback to their childhood and the fascination the slightly crazy one has with flying. So maybe after the horror of war it's a more logical decision to be a bird! A brilliant film about disillusionment, growing up and existential madness.

CATCH-22 (1970)
Certification15 Our Rating
Adapted from the classic, absurdist, anti-war novel by Joseph Heller. "Catch-22" is the story of Yossarian, a pilot who trys to opt out of flying bombing missions by being declared insane, the catch being that anyone trying to avoid bombing missions by being insane must be sane. This dark classic catches much of the flavour of the book, the insanity, the corruption and the absurdity of war. Think MASH, but non-linear - flawed but awesome.

CHILDREN OF MEN (2006)

In a not far off dystopian future women have become infertile and governments have forgotten that Orwell's ‘1984' was supposed to be a searing indictment of what NOT to do. Into this less than hopeful world arrives a young woman who has achieved the miracle of pregnancy, everyone wants the child as a cynical totem for the people, and those planning rebellion are as ruthless as those in power. Finding a reluctant but increasingly determined guardian in the form of Theo, mother and child go in sea

COMING HOME (1978)

A rather over-sentimentalised romantic drama about the wife of a war-hero who falls in love with a paraplegic 'Nam vet. The drama is underplayed, and cliched in places, and Jane Fonda, despite a sterling attempt, comes across as just a bit too saintly. The ending adds credibilty though.

When the local postman is brought in, delirious but trying to impart an urgent message, the murders begin. The eccent

M.A.S.H (1969)

Not to be confused with the TV series, good though that was this is the original item that started it all off. Blacker harder-hitting and funnier than the TV version, although featuring the same characters and some of the same actors. An all-time classic anti-war movie. Just brilliant, see it!

RED ANGEL (1966)

Set in the Sino-Japanese war, Yasuzo Masumura's black-and-white anti-war film tells of an army nurse who sexually services an amputee and falls in love with a drug-addicted surgeon. This can't be recommended to the squeamish, but neither can its nuanced eroticism nor its passionate, unpredictable moral focus, be easily shaken off. Comparable with Altman's MASH, it suggests a less comic treatment of the same theme, how to preserve one's humanity in impossible circumstances, but its ethics are con
