CATCH-22 (1970)

Adapted from the classic, absurdist, anti-war novel by Joseph Heller. "Catch-22" is the story of Yossarian, a pilot who trys to opt out of flying bombing missions by being declared insane, the catch being that anyone trying to avoid bombing missions by being insane must be sane. This dark classic catches much of the flavour of the book, the insanity, the corruption and the absurdity of war. Think MASH, but non-linear - flawed but awesome. find out more...

The original television series version following the crew of a German WW2 U-Boat as they live together, hunt Allied shipping and are preyed on themselves. The tension, claustrophobia and their fear leap out of the screen and totally avoids any sense of nationalism in what would have been fatal for this superb production.
Awesome.

We follow their travails through France's first military defeat of Germany, by raw Arab conscripts, through to being the first French troops to fight their way into Alsace. Throughout they are treated as second rate people by French men, though oddly not always by the women, denied full rations, promotions or leave - they do and they die. As a war find out more...

Like 'Life is Beautiful' the film successfully manages a comic take on the horrors of WW2. In a small Nazi-occupied Czech town childless Josef and his wife Marie hide Jewish ex-boss David in their small flat whilst coping with the unwanted friendship of ex-employee and collaborator Horst. Brilliant, bizarre, and very dark. find out more...

Knowing that his father had been some sort of WW2 war hero writer James Bradley set out to discover the truth about him and the fellow marines who raised the flag over Iwo Jima for the now infamously 'fraudulent' photgraph. We follow this ironically socially heterogeneous group of men through the horrors of one of the most bloody battles of WW2, interspliced with the early return home of three of the 'heroes' to act as politically manipulated cheerleaders for further fundraising to continue the find out more...
