Review
A key film from the Czech New Wave cinema of the mid-'60s. In Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, a lowly carpenter becomes the 'Aryan comptroller' of a stone-deaf old Jewish lady's shop and is caught twixt self-interest and affection for her. An Oscar winning well acted and crafted political tragedy.
